(CNN) — As millions of people fled their homes from deadly wildfires in California, the federal government on Tuesday signed an executive order to provide support for communities struggling to recover from the disasters.

President Donald Trump signed the executive order directing the nation’s National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop a prototype of a “precision, autonomous system” for mapping and forecasting wildfires.

The order was the latest sign that he is committed to the federal government’s role in fighting the blazes, which have killed nearly 80 people and destroyed homes, commercial buildings and other structures in the state, and are expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The orders, which were issued by the President at the National Ocean Sciences Organisation, in the office of the Vice President Mike Pence, were in response to the wildfires that have consumed hundreds of miles in California since last month
