Gunmen kill 12 people in Mexico bar

At least 12 people were killed and 18 others were injured in a fight between members of the Zetas drug cartel and a rival gang in a restaurant in Mexico City, police said Tuesday. The incident took place in a bar popular with the drug gang, known as Los Zetas. The rival gang was later also identified as the Tijuana Cartel, or Los Zetas in their Tijuanero slang.

New York Times, in the article titled “Drugs, Bullets and Blood: The Zetas and the State”, published on June 4, 2004, reported:

Mexico City. At least 12 people were killed and 18 others were injured in a fight between members of the Zetas drug cartel and a rival gang in a restaurant in Mexico City, police said Tuesday. The incident took place in a bar popular with the drug gang, known as Los Zetas.

As the fight broke out, the assailants sprayed gunfire at rival gangs, killing 12 people in the restaurant, including two of the assailants. In addition to those killed, two other victims were wounded. Police were investigating whether the gunmen carried out the attack as payback for a failed assassination attempt in April of a leader of the Tijuana Cartel, or Los Zetas, in Juarez.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday in a bar owned by the Zetas, or “the flower”, a nickname given to the cartel, in a popular area of the city with a large number of nightlife parties. Police said the attack took place in Zetas territory on a street running along a line of bars not far from the Zetas’ headquarters.

During the night, the bodies of the two killers who arrived with the attackers were found among some of the Zetas’ party guests in the bar. “He wasn’t able to identify them, he only said they were two Zetas. There’s so many guys that they could be part of this drug gang, we just don’t know which one it was, and where they were from,” the police official who spoke to the New York Times
