Rafael Nadal withdraws from Laver Cup due to ‘personal reasons’
Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Laver Cup in Melbourne due to “personal reasons.”
Nadal and his father are staying with Nadal’s mother at the time of the postponement, which is the second time this year the men’s singles will not be taking place. This time it is due to Nadal’s father’s health.
Nadal won the Australian Open in January. He last played the event in 2006 and 2007. Nadal and his father both have family in Australia. Nadal’s father was born in Australia, but the Spaniard is fluent in the language.
The Laver Cup is one of the men’s tennis Grand Slams. The other majors are the US Open and Wimbledon.
Nadal’s withdrawal ends the 2016 edition of the Laver Cup. Nadal won two previous editions, 2012 and 2013. He won the event in two successive editions in 1994 and 1995. He was the top men’s singles player in the 1990s and started the first edition of the event in 1994. His father, Franco, was captain for two editions of the Laver Cup, the first in 1994 and the second in 1996. He was captain in the 1999 edition.
“Unfortunately, my father is in some difficult health problems, which require me for more time with him,” Nadal said in a statement. “Unfortunately, my parents, myself and my staff have to decide the date and venue of a very important event for both my family, my team and myself. Despite this, I am always in the dream state of being able to play in this fantastic tournament, having won it on two previous occasions.”
