LOS ANGELES – A tropical storm making its way slowly northeastward toward the state late Friday will bring a deluge of rain and snow to Southern California along with high winds and thunderstorms, forecasters said Monday.

But unlike past storms, where such weather can deliver deadly flooding to Southern California, this storm is expected to be less menacing, even less destructive, since it’s moving slowly and only dumping about 1-in-2,000 inches (3.9-foot) of rain or snow.

The Associated Press called the storm “at least the most benign tropical storm of 2013” and expects it to be one of the “weaker storms” making its way toward Southern California through the weekend or early next week.

By Tuesday there could be anywhere from 1-in-1,500 inches (3.7-foot) in the mountains and 7-in-1,000 inches in the valleys, said meteorologist Scott Howard of the weather service
