The “When We Were Young” music festival planned for Saturday in Louisville has been postponed due to high winds, said Steve Leber of the city’s Office of Economic and Community Development.

As of Friday afternoon, the event had been postponed until Jan. 15. The music, headlined by R&B singer Mary J. Blige, had been scheduled for Saturday in downtown Louisville and held at the historic St. Ambrose University’s Allen Auditorium. The concert drew more than 650 people, according to event promoter and director Kevin P. Taylor. The first concert was moved from St. Ambrose by 11:30 a.m., Leber said.

As the day progressed Saturday, the winds came up to wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour. While the weather was initially good, Taylor said that the wind was “out of control.”

Louisville City Council member Jeff Orsi said it’s disappointing not to have the festival.

“It’s unfortunate. When you consider what the city of Louisville is all about, it really puts on an economic boost to downtown,” Orsi said. “And it’s always a good idea to put on a festival downtown.”

Scheduled to open Saturday are music, food, art, entertainment and children’s activities. People are warned to bring rain-appropriate rain gear.

The festival has drawn criticism — and praise — from area residents.

Mayor Greg Fischer said, “The festival is an ‘event,’ and it’s up to the event promoter to determine what they can and can’t put into a festival. If they have problems with the festival in general, then they are going to have to deal with that. Obviously, this was a difficult situation for everyone involved. Our city needs an event like this. A lot of people in the city of Louisville deserve to enjoy it.”

Fischer said he has seen similar festivals in other cities.

Taylor said he has no regrets about the decision to move up the event in time for the holidays.
