The world’s top seeds have been beaten in their first-round matches at this year’s US Open, with one of them not taking the result very well, whilst another lost in the second round in a match he admitted he would do anything to win.

Nick Kyrgios took an early lead against world No. 2 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev, but struggled to hold the advantage for long in the opening set before Medvedev won a pivotal point on a tie-break.

At the start of the second set Medvedev was a couple of points ahead, but Kyrgios levelled the match on a backhand winner on his fourth service game and then held the lead when, with Medvedev serving for the match at 5-3, he hit a forehand into the net off his racket to make it 6-5.

Medvedev then served out the set to take the first set 8-5, but the second set was much closer. Kyrgios pulled away from then on a second match point when Medvedev’s second serve hit the net. He held to win the second set 10-8. He admitted he would have liked to win the match on his fourth match point.

“I didn’t see the shot. Obviously I’m disappointed,” he said, before admitting he wasn’t very good at finishing those points. Medvedev was also disappointed with this kind of result.

He said: “It’s been a hard week, for me, because I’m the defending champion and I have a new opponent in the Open.”

Medvedev was the seventh seed to not survive the first round in a match he regarded as his best chance of winning. But the Russian did a job on Kyrgios on his way to taking the match, taking him into the second round.

Medvedev said: “Even if you are the seventh seed, it’s difficult to beat a world No. 2, especially when you’ve got two match points, especially after the first set. Then that first set went so long for me and then he won a point on a tiebreak.

“It’s tough. I had a little bit of pressure but I’m not feeling bad at all after the match.

“I think it was better than the match we had in
