The body of an American aid worker in Baghdad was found in a mass grave Monday and the military said there are indications the man was involved in a deadly assault on anti-Iraqi militia. A U.S.-trained Iraqi medical official confirmed the incident is under investigation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The body of an American aid worker in Baghdad was found in a mass grave Monday and the military said there are indications the man was involved in a deadly assault on anti-Iraqi militia.

The State Department confirmed the death of Kenneth McVay, 55, a physician who worked in Iraq for several years on medical and educational projects under the U.S. Institute for International Women’s Medical Training. The U.S.-trained Iraqi medical official confirmed that the man was found in a mass grave.

A U.S.-trained Iraqi medical official said the death is under investigation, but the U.S. would not confirm whether McVay was in Iraq on a scheduled contract for the U.S.-run Iraqi Medical Institute.

A U.S. official told The Associated Press that McVay had been working for several years as an Iraqi medical educator in medical and education projects. McVay was the first foreign medical worker in Iraq to be certified as an independent doctor by a U.S. authority.

The death of the U.S.-trained volunteer and his partner also shocked his Iraqi colleagues, particularly as they say they’ve worked with him for several years.

“There wasn’t a sound,” Dr. Maj. Mohammed Saleh, the head of the hospital in Mahmoudiya, told The Associated Press. “They took his body (to the morgue)… in a hurry.”

He said he had no reason to suspect the body was being kept as a body double for another American aid worker, Mark O’Donnell, who was killed recently on the streets of Baghdad.
